What Is a Limited Driving License in MO?
A driver’s license suspension is one of the consequences of driving while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.
People whose licenses have been suspended, revoked, or denied but who are not yet eligible for reinstatement can apply for a limited driving privilege (LDP), also known as a hardship license, and gain limited driving privileges.
The hardship driving privileges allow you to regain some of your driving rights for preapproved situations after a DWI arrest and license suspension. If the court deems it necessary, you can use this license to go to work, school, substance abuse rehabilitation, medical treatment, and other places.

Getting LDP for Short-term License Suspension
An LDP can be obtained in two ways during a 90-day suspension for first offense DWI. Firstly, you can serve the first thirty days of your suspension before purchasing SR-22 insurance. Once you complete this step, the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) will mail you the LDP.
The second option is to obtain a driving privilege from the first day of the suspension. There is no longer a thirty-day waiting period, but you need to provide proof of SR-22 insurance, install a device in your vehicle, and file a request for a limited driving privilege with the DOR.
Having a car accident attorney in Kansas City help you complete your paperwork is always a good idea.
Who is Ineligible for a Hardship License?
A hardship license will not be granted if the reason for the conviction or revocation is serious. these reasons include the following:
- A motor vehicle-related felony conviction has occurred in the last five years.
- The DOR revoked your license for failing to pass a driving or medical examination.
- The suspension resulted from an unsatisfied accident judgment or nonpayment of a traffic ticket.
- Your license was suspended for a felony DWI conviction.
- The DOR has placed an administrative alcohol-related suspension on your license.
- You do not reside, work, or attend school in Missouri.
It is important to note that no commercial LDP may be issued if a commercial driver’s license is suspended, revoked, or canceled.
